The Trans Am shaker was introduced in the 70 model year and continued until 1981. The shaker had
a rounded appearance from 1970 - 1975. 1976 - 1980 the
shaker
became
more pronounced with hard lines and became somewhat pointed. In 1980
and 1981 the offset shaker made its appearance, making the hood and shaker combination one
piece.
1970 - 1973 shakers had an operational flap, that was
actuated as
the
throttle was opened.
Basically, two solenoids pull the movable flap
open, allowing outside air to be pulled into the
carberator. The position of the throttle controlled a vacuum switch with activated the solenoids, pulling the flap open.
Shaker's with the closed opening extracted air from the side fender vents via the air cleaner.
There was a tube that connected the snorkle end of the air
cleaner to
the side air extracter vent
in the driver's side fender.
